A Primary Care Doctor Keeps this Busy Mother Healthy for her Family and Herself
Tiffane’s primary care provider is someone she could trust to manage her eczema and also provide essential support through life's pivotal moments, including a challenging workplace accident and the births of her children.
NEED FOR A "PARTNER IN HEALTH"
As a 37-year-old mother of four young children, Tiffane knows how important it is for her to be her healthiest self. And although she considers herself healthy, she has chronic illnesses, including eczema, that need to be managed. This involves regular doctor visits, specialist referrals and prescription medications.
In Dr. P, Tiffane has more than a doctor—she has a partner who truly cares about and advocates for her health. As her primary care doctor, he helps treat her ongoing conditions. But he has also supported Tiffane through both unexpected and planned life changes, including a workplace injury as well as long-term recovery following the births of her children.
FINDING SOLUTIONS
In 2015, Tiffane started seeing Dr. P for regular physical examinations to help with her eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Finding a specialist — a dermatologist — who accepts Medicaid, her public health insurance plan, has been challenging, so instead she works with Dr. P to manage her symptoms and use medications he has prescribed that soothe her uncomfortable, dry skin and itchiness.
A couple of years later, Dr. P played a crucial role in Tiffane’s recovery from a workplace fall injury. After leaving the emergency room, Tiffane went to see Dr. P, who conducted some mobility tests. He then helped arrange some nearby physical therapy appointments and connected Tiffane with the Worker’s Compensation Board so that she could submit a claim and receive benefits while unable to work.
Dr. P has also supported Tiffane through each of her pregnancies, referring her to an ob-gyn who is part of his hospital system and supporting her recovery after delivery. To help with healing and shedding pregnancy weight, he referred her to a nutritionist, offered tips and advice for making healthy meals and explained how to use the benefits she receives through the WIC program at farmers’ markets so that she can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
THE ROAD AHEAD: CONSISTENT, CONSCIENTIOUS CARE
Over the years, Dr. P has helped Tiffane manage virtually every aspect of her health, so that she can support and take care of her family. He often makes follow-up calls to Tiffane after her appointments with him, or with a specialist to whom he made a referral, to check in and see how she is doing.
“With some medical appointments, I find myself spending more time in the waiting than the exam room,” said Tiffane. “That is not the case with Dr. P. He listens to everything I have to say and never rushes the visit.”
Unlike Tiffane, too many people in New York can’t see a doctor when they need to. New York leaders need to require health insurance companies to prioritize spending on primary care. That is how we will make sure everyone in the state can get the kind of care Tiffane gets when they need it.
